What’s Happening in March

Top 8 AC Invitation

After 4 days of strong competition, the final day’s play was abandoned due to heavy rain. Logan McCorkindale was declared the winner with 11 wins out of 12 matches. Runner-up Paddy Chapman.

Greg Bryant, Toby Garrison, Paddy Chapman, Joe Hogan, Aaron Westerby, Felix Webby, Logan McCorkindale, Josh Freeth

We're hosting New Zealand's top eight Association Croquet (AC) players - including our Club's Toby Garrison, current NZ #3 - in a major tournament from Saturday 15 to Wednesday 19 March. Lawns aren't available for Club draws from 15th - 19th but members are very welcome to come and watch New Zealand's best players showing an incredible range of strategy, tactics and shots.

Fast learners

School coaching is going well but we'd love more helpers please - our young players are learning real golf croquet and they learn fast! They pick up plenty in just an hour so it's very rewarding to see. Each group from Hataitai School has three sessions over three weeks and includes several kids who played last year so partner the newbies. Sure, a few kids are more boisterous than the first-time adults we usually coach - but they're also joyfull, generous, engaged and well-supervised by their croquet-playing teacher Megan. To give it a go pop your name on the board to help for just 60 minutes one Thursday afternoon this month or next.

Double-Taps

All your questions answered! Not worked out quite what IS a double-tap, how you avoid one, how you detect one and what happens if you or your opponent make a double-tap fault? This short video animation clearly tells you everything you need to know - shots to avoid a double-tap, ways to tell when there is a double-tap and what to do about it under the rules of croquet. It's a quick watch and you'll come away wiser!

Have-a-Go success

Thank you to everyone who helped coach our guests during the Have-a-Go season. Once again it was very successful for the Club with many happy customers coming back for the second, third or fourth time! It's Have-a-Go events that keep our subs low and contribute to the many improvements and extras round the Club, and some interest from new members. So it's important we have a large pool of coaches to rely on so nobody becomes overwhelmed. We're looking at a few minor changes for next season which should make it even easier for more coach-helpers to contribute to an event or two next season.

What Happened in February

Don Reyland Stars

Congratulations to Stuart Duff who has won the club play-offs of this national GC competition. Stuart will now represent out club at the Wellington Regional play-offs. Play well Stuart!

School croquet

We will welcome Hataitai School back to learn croquet from Thursday 13 Feb. The group of youngsters will visit each Thursday afternoon from 1.15-2.15 for lessons - some played last year others are new to it, all are lively and keen! We welcome as many coaches as possible for the season, ideally 6 people each Thursday. Ask anyone who's done it before - it's a rewarding whirlwind and a heap of fun! We'll put sign-up dates on the board early in February

What’s Was New in January

The lawns are playing beautifully and weather has mostly come right so we’re looking forward to lots more croquet this summer! Club comps are progressing well with many matches played and some of the competitions have already been completed.

Congratulations John Murphy - Winner of the GC Novice Singles

Friday Afternoon GC

We're trialling a new, casual GC session on Friday afternoons from 2pm and it's proving popular. Roll up just before 2 and you'll be partnered up for a draw with a twist or two, then stay on for Friday Frolics around 4pm. It's fun for new players and experienced alike, with new tricks and tactics to try. Bring a drink or snack to share and stay on to chat

Kid’s Day

Our traditional day hosting young family members and friends was a huge success. weather couldn’t have been better and the ice-cream went down really well with young and old alike.

WCA 100th AC Open Singles Championship

Another very successful tournament hosted by our club over 4 days 27 - 30 December. Thank you to everyone who helped with the hoops, the lawns and grounds, and the catering. We couldn’t do it without you all.
